Why do you need Ukrainian Tax ID and how can you get it as a foreign investor?

If you are looking to enter the Ukrainian market, you will quickly realize that your passport alone isn’t enough to get things moving. Whether you are opening a bank account, registering a company, or buying real estate, there is one document you simply cannot skip: the RNTRC, or as everyone locally calls it, the Tax ID.

Think of it as your official "ID card" for the Ukrainian financial system. It’s a 10-digit number that stays with you for life, and here is exactly how you can get it without the bureaucratic stress.

Why it’s a must-have for you

In Ukraine, the Tax ID is the "master key" for almost any official action. You will need it to:

– Launch a business: You cannot be listed as a founder or director of a Ukrainian company without this number.

– Handle finances: From opening a personal bank account to receiving an official salary or dividends.

– Close a deal: A notary will not certify the purchase of an apartment or a car if you don’t have your Tax ID certificate.

– Invest: Any significant investment into the Ukrainian economy requires you to be registered in the tax database.

The Process: Simple but Precise

The good news is that the process itself is quite fast, but it requires 100% accuracy in the paperwork.

1. Passport Translation: You don’t just need a copy of your passport; you need a notarized Ukrainian translation. This is where most mistakes happen – the spelling of your name in Ukrainian must be consistent across all your future documents (bank, company, notary).

2. The Application: You need to file a Form No. 1DR with the State Tax Service. It includes your personal data and your permanent address abroad.

3. The Waiting Game: Once the documents are submitted, it usually takes 3 to 5 business days for the Tax Office to issue your certificate.

Can You Do This Remotely?

Absolutely. Most of our clients prefer not to waste their time in government offices. You can obtain a Tax ID from anywhere in the world by issuing a Power of Attorney (PoA) to a local representative.

If you sign the PoA abroad, it simply needs to be apostilled (or legalized) and then translated here in Ukraine. Once we have that, we handle the filing, talk to the tax authorities, and courier the physical certificate directly to your door.

A Few Useful Tips

– The "One Spelling" Rule: Ensure your name is translated the same way every time. If your Tax ID says "Jon" but your company papers say "John," you will face delays at the bank.

– It’s Not About Taxes (Yet): Getting a Tax ID doesn't automatically make you a tax resident of Ukraine or mean you owe taxes here. It’s just a registration.

– Keep the Paper Safe: While the number is yours forever, you’ll often be asked for the original paper certificate with the official stamp.
